Acupuncture and Cancer Treatment

In the last decade, the most esteemed cancer centers have been utilizing the benefits of acupuncture as a complementary adjuvant to the rigors of chemo and radiation.  They have found that acupuncture promotes optimal nutrition, sleep, and comfort during the weeks of cancer treatment allowing patients to move through this time more successfully.  Improving the quality of life during chemo and radiation is a great support to those going through cancer treatment.

The research shows that many of the mechanisms of acupuncture are based on stimulation of the neuroendocrine system and the subsequent response of the central and peripheral nervous systems.  This means that acupuncture helps regulate several neurotransmitters and the release of the body’s own opioids.  The studies show this has positive effects on mood, pain relief and various other body systems such as digestion.

Each person presents with their own physical challenges when they begin cancer treatment.  The focus of acupuncture will be tailored to whatever symptoms are most prevalent for that individual.  Most commonly we use acupuncture to help with side effects such as:

  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Constipation and Digestive Difficulties
  • Fatigue
  • Depression, Anxiety and Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Pain

It is widely accepted that acupuncture is very safe, and the risks associated with acupuncture treatment are extremely low.  The needles should not feel painful during a session after they are inserted.   Most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing and enjoy a restful nap!
