Quercetin
by Kolleen Mitchell, LAc
Quercetin is a highly effective, natural and nontoxic anti-histamine that works wonders for any type of allergy symptoms and it does so without the drowsy or jittery side effects of most over the counter allergy meds. Quercetin, a bioflavanoid, gives fruits and veggies their color and also gives them anti-oxidant protection from environmental stress. In our bodies, quercetin acts to stabilize components of our immune system responsible for creating the inflammatory response to allergens that we know as runny nose, itchy eyes and scratchy throat. Without the inflammation, we see a marked reduction in our typical allergy response and also other inflammatory conditions such as asthma. Blue-green algae is the food source with the highest concentration of quercetin and it is also sold as a supplement. Because it is almost insoluble in water, you will get the most benefit if you take it in combination with bromelain, a natural enzyme derived from pineapples. The regular dosing is 500 mg taken 2-3 times a day. A one-month supply is $14.99 for the combination quercetin & bromelain sold in our office. If you suffer from allergies and dislike the side effects of common medications, quercetin provides a great, natural source of relief.
*It should not be taken with any medications that indicate interactions with grapefruit, onions, or apples.
