Weight Loss and the Food We Eat (a Two-Part Series)
By Toby Helmstetter, LAc
On the health history forms our new patients have to fill out for their first visit, we ask everyone what the main problem is they'd like to address with acupuncture. In addition to many of the common complaints one would think to come to acupuncture for--pain, insomnia, stress--some people write "weight loss." The first thing our acupuncturists always tell those people is that acupuncture is no magic bullet, and that acupuncture when combined with healthy eating and life-style habits, can help a person lose weight.
Yesterday on the People's Pharmacy, I heard this wonderful interview with science writer Gary Taubes. He's written a book called "Why We Get Fat and What to Do About It." He's been researching the subject of weight loss and why evidence is beginning to show that low-fat diets may be making it difficult for people to actually lose weight. I thought it would be a great idea to post the link to this episode of the People's Pharmacy, so everyone could hear it and then, in next month's newsletter, we could discuss some of the major points mentioned in this interview to help people who are struggling with their weight. I'll also offer cook books and other reading material to help people get started if the information presented seems right for them. While I'm not a nutritionist, I have a vested interest in helping people live fuller, healthier lives and I believe one way we can do that is through the food we eat!

And if you have specific questions on this topic that you'd like me to discuss in the next installment of this article, the next time you're in the office, stick a note in the "Ask the Acupuncturist" box in the waiting room at either clinic. Happy listening! I'm excited to share such an important topic with everyone.
